Macon City Councilman Visits
Business Ethics Class
  • Rick Hutto, Macon City Council member, visited Tom Eden's Business Ethics class in October to share his thoughts and personal experiences with the class. In addition to his elected office, Hutto is a Macon , Georgia attorney and development consultant. He is also the Associate Publisher of Henchard Press and has published two books and is in the process of completing another. He serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Hay House, Macon Arts, Macon Heritage Foundation and the Douglas Theatre . Formerly, Rick was the Carter family's Appointments Secretary at the White House and served as Executive Assistant to former Lieutenant Governor Zell Miller.

Rick told the class that ethics, business or personal, is a moral sense that is instilled in you as you grow up. Rick reiterated that good ethics practice is “doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” He shared two personal, real life examples of ethics he has encountered, one early in his career as a Washington lawyer and the other as a city councilman. These led to an informative and lively class discussion about how you may handle difficult situations and still maintain you own ethics. He also answered some questions and provided interesting insight about his years working for President Carter at the White House and later Zell Miller at the State Capital.
